What an amazing experience HR Tampa (#HRTampa) participants had during the recent SHRM "Day in the Beltway" in Washington, DC on September 9, 2015...an experience we will never forget!
Upon our arrival in DC, we were fortunate to walk through U.S. history by seeing the White House, the Washington Monument, the Capitol Building, visit the solemn War Memorials and experience the Martin Luther King Memorial, and many more.
We were so proud to be able to join the efforts of Meredith Nethercutt and Kelly Hastings from the SHRM executive office and specifically, to experience first-hand their professionalism and commitment to the cause of advancing HR efforts throughout the world. Their insight into the legislative process proved to be both rewarding and critical during our Day on the Hill.
As a first-time participant, I must be honest that I was a little nervous before heading into this uncharted territory. Often times the political process can be overwhelming with perceptions derived often from the media, but not today.
To actually enter the tenured halls where Senate and Congressional leaders have walked for decades was truly amazing and inspiring to say the least. Seeing hundreds of people scurrying about from meeting to meeting brought much respect and appreciation, all at the same time.
Next up was to represent SHRM in face-face meetings to discuss hot topics pressing to the HR profession. What a pleasure it was to visit the offices of Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson and personally meet US Representative Kathy Castor and Congressman Gus Bilirakis to whom we are especially grateful.
We would like to thank everyone who took the time to meet with us to express their honest interest in what we came to present. Whether it was discussing Federal Efforts to Repeal the Excise "Cadillac" Tax or the Proposed FLSA Overtime "White Collar" Regulations, we were warmly welcomed and the interaction was remarkable, memorable, and enlightening as a result of all that we learned.
We so appreciate this opportunity and are truly thankful for this unforgettable experience.
