Welcome to 2016! 

I am honored to be leading HR Tampa for a second year. We have a great year planned for you. Last year, your Board of Directors committed hundreds of hours of their personal time with one goal in mind: Grow the Chapter! Growing the Chapter is more than just growing the membership, it is growing the number of members actively engaged. Every decision made was centered around the question, "How will it benefit the members?" We are pleased to report, membership grew by 9.2%!

Member engagement will continue to be our focus in 2016. Member engagement is critical to the longevity of a successful chapter. Without you, there is no chapter. Your board is committed to bringing you the best programs and outstanding opportunities for you to get involved, regardless of your years of experience or availability. There will be something for everyone. 

Being a part of HR Tampa, is more than just attending monthly chapter meetings. It is about being a part of a community. A community to expand your professional network, build lasting friendships, learn new ideas and exchange best practices, mentor, find your next opportunity, acquire new talent and so much more.  There are many ways to get involved, whether it’s writing letters to your representatives, volunteering in the community with other HR Tampa members, or being a part of a committee; we want to help you get the most of your membership and take your career to the next level! 

Throughout the year, HR Tampa will offer programs created specifically for you. Here is just a sampling of what we have lined up for you:

  • Certification Classes: Beginning in February
  • Let your voice be heard in 2016: Day on the Hill (Tallahassee) and Day in the Beltway (Washington, D.C.)
  • New Member Game Night: Coming in April
  • Leadership Series
  • Volunteer in the community with HR Tampa: Some of the groups we've partnered with include Metropolitan Ministries, Lifepath Hospice, Eckerd, and United Way Suncoast
  • Veterans' Initiatives: Resume reviews, mock interviews, speak at veteran events on HR Topics
  •  HR Prodigy: Teach an HR topic at local high schools
  • College Relations: Take an active role with our young professionals
  • HR Florida State Conference: We will raffle off several registrations throughout the next five months!

February Monthly Meeting

Legislative Update:

 

Hillsborough County, Florida Passes Wage Theft Ordinance

On October 21, 2015, the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners enacted the “Hillsborough County Wage Recovery Ordinance.” By it terms, the ordinance applies to all employers within Hillsborough County and any company with an employee or independent contractor who performs work within Hillsborough County. The ordinance also applies to “third-party labor providers,” although the Board left this term undefined. 

A violation of the ordinance occurs if an employer does not pay an employee for work performed within a “reasonable time”—presumed to be within 14 calendar days from the date on which the work is performed (unless the employer has established regularly recurring pay periods)—and the amount to be paid exceeds $60.  (Read more...)
