PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE


“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Zig Ziglar

 

We did it! Actually, we keep doing it. When I became your chapter president in 2015, I set a very ambitious goal: Become the largest, most engaged chapter in Florida. At that time, we were third with 557 members. I am proud to report, that our latest count (reported by SHRM) is 764 members, making HR Tampa #1 in the state of Florida!

I am a firm believer that success comes by first setting a goal, and taking steps that will lead you to that goal.  Whether it’s my personal life (running my next marathon), professional life (setting sales goals and goals for my clients) or in my volunteer roles (such as HR Tampa), having clear, defined goals keeps you focused and motivated. While the end goal is cause for celebration, each “win” along the way can be equally as exciting.

These are just some of the “wins” we have celebrated these last two years that helped us achieve our goal include:

  • Winning the HR Florida Chapter Excellence Award for Workforce Readiness in 2015
  • Growing the Chapter membership from 557 members to 608 members (12/2015), making us the 2nd largest chapter
  • Being awarded the prestigious EXCEL Platinum Award by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for the chapter's accomplishments in 2015
  • Being ranked #7 in the country for SHRM Foundation donations in 2015
  • Filling a void in the Tampa Bay Community to help soldiers navigate their way from their military career into a successful civilian career. By creating the Veterans’ Initiative, HR Tampa volunteers have provided assistance to over 300 military personnel with resume review, job search techniques, skills translation, etc., either in person, electronically, or through speaking engagements
  • Needing to increase our attendance count for our monthly evening meeting in June, we anticipated 125 registrations and we were pleased to have 157 attendees attend
  • Offering 9 recertification credits at our upcoming Expo on October 19th
  • Winning the HR Florida Chapter Excellence Award for Diversity, recognizing our Veterans’ Initiative in 2016

Each of these accomplishments have helped us achieve our goal. More importantly, it is helping us become more recognizable in the Tampa Bay business community. Being affiliated with HR Tampa, means you are affiliated with an organization that sets and attains high goals.

We don’t plan on slowing down any time soon. With the 4th quarter quickly approaching we have even more ways for members to become actively engaged with HR Tampa. We are looking for committee volunteers to continue our succession planning for years to come. Volunteer today! Join us at our Networking event at the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay on October 6th, then again for our Expo on October 19th. Our November Diversity Summit promises to be a great program as we have secured a panel of experts to address hot topics in the workplace centered around diversity and inclusion. Finally, you won’t want to miss our Holiday Party on December 7th at Busch Gardens!

In closing, I encourage all of you to set a goal either personally or professionally in the next 30 days. Don’t wait until the New Year. Start now. Each day will bring you one step closer to achieving it and I promise, you will have a blast celebrating the small “wins” along the way.

Pressured to get results fast, many managers move from crises to crises, stressing out their teams along the way. Leading like that may work in short-term, but eventually drains creativity, incents apathy, and degrades trust. It becomes more and more difficult to rally the team the next time.
